From Margins to Centre? An Undergraduate Conference on Marginalised Histories

*Please note that applications are now closed*

We will be hosting a one day conference, on February 28th 2020, at the University of York. The keynote speaker will be Catherine Hall, Emerita Professor of History at UCL. We invite undergraduate students to submit abstracts (between 100 and 250 words) on marginalised histories. The deadline for submissions is December 1st 2019.

We’ve chosen four areas of history that we feel are underrepresented in most history: women’s history, LGBT+ history, BME history, and histories of disability. These themes are so rarely explored, especially in an intersectional manner, that we want to give them space and give students a chance to engage with them. However, we also strongly encourage submissions that explore marginalised histories but do not explicitly fit these categories, or that discuss the very ideas of margin and centre. We invite all submissions within these boundaries, across place and time - there is no set period or locale of study. There will be a poster session for applicants who do not want to present a paper. We may ask you to present a poster if our panels are already full.

Being part of a conference like this is good preparation for further study and work in academia, giving students a chance to build vital skills, which can be useful in other fields too.

There may be some travel funding for student speakers, subject to availability.

The idea for this conference grew out of the University of York’s workshop on the RHS report on Race and Ethnicity in History. We were struck by the discussions we took part in, and realised that we wanted to create a similar event that allowed undergraduate students to engage with the discipline - but in particular with the histories and discussions that resonate with them, and which don’t often receive space in history more generally. For us, the conference is an opportunity for students to take ownership of the discipline at an early stage in their academic career, and to tell the stories that matter to them. #UGhistconf

The conference is sponsored by the Department of History at the University of York.
